Appropriate signage for the areas where medicinal gases are stored or used

These signs are bespoke to your facility and can include your emergency information. Signage is needed to comply with the requirements in HTM02-01 and can be supplied for areas such as manifold rooms, medical gas plant rooms and medical gas cylinder stores (this list is not exhaustive).

HTM02-01 stipulates the following:

8.57 The following signs should be posted: 

a. safety signage (Hazchem notices) in accordance with the requirements of the Health & Safety (Safety Signs & Signals) Regulations 1996, BS 5499-5:2002 and the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 should be posted in and outside any area where cylinders are stored;

b. a store identification notice. Suitable wording could be: “Medical gas storage area – smoking, welding and naked lights prohibited”;

c. a store contents notice, clearly indicating the contents of the store;

d. a medical gas cylinder identification chart and other relevant safety warning charts, posted inside the store;

e. an “emergency actions” notice, giving details of emergency action procedures and location of keys and contact numbers, should be clearly posted on the front of the cylinder store.

Example bespoke signs

Manifold Room

To be used to indicate the manifold room, which is piping medical gases into the building. The sign should be located on the entrance door and inside, centrally above the cylinders.

Medical Gas Cylinder Store

To be used to indicate the cylinder store holding area for medical gases. The sign should be located on the entrance door and inside, centrally above the cylinders.

Medical Gases in this Area

To be used to indicate where cylinders are used that have no fixed abode. i.e., they move around in between various rooms. Or where there are cylinders spread across different areas. The sign should be located on the entrance into the areas.

Cylinder Parking Area

To be used to indicate the designated location that cylinders are parked within an area. For example, where cylinders are to be parked in trolleys for emergency use on a ward. The sign should be located on the wall above where the cylinders are parked.

Cylinder Store Bay Signs

To be used inside the medical gas storage area above each bay to indicate the gas type and whether the bay is for full or empty cylinders. Gases should be segregated by their type, and whether they are full or empty.

Cylinder Wine Rack Signs

To be used as label on each shelf of cylinder racking to indicate the gas type, and whether the shelf is for full or empty cylinders. Gases should be segregated by their type, and whether they are full or empty.
